News in the market trending these days that the official support of Magento 1 is ending in 2020, that also means no more features update, no more security update. This has made the migration process more essential for the merchants who are currently running their platform in Magento 1.x [Community & enterprise version]. Magento 1.x will still be accessible and useable, but it will no longer receive any official support. For a successful and secure Magento 1 to Magento 2 migration, one should need to create a migration plan thoroughly and test it. I am hoping that the below recommendations will prove helpful for your Magento migration.

Steps to follow for Secure Magento 1 to 2 Migration

Step 1: Backup Before making any changes to the website [Migration or Upgradation], you should take a backup of all the details of the website as it saves the websites from any unwanted hindrance. Though it’s a very basic step, a very important one.  This process might help you in recovering your sensitive data, in case of any failure.

Step 2: Listing the current website extensions Existing website extensions need to be identified, reviewed and listed. The developer also needs to check the extensions versions available in Magento 2.  There can be a possibility of getting the upgraded versions, of the extensions in Magento 2.

Step 3: Preparing the Magento 2 Store environment for migration Set up a Magento 2 using the arrangement of network and design similar matches as the Magento 1 website. Then the developer should install the required Magento 2.x version with all available modules and the tool for data migration. Customization can also be implemented to the tool as per the requirement.

Step 4: Testing environment dry run  Test the migration steps on a staging environment before applying it to the production server. You can copy the Magento 1 store to the testing environment, migrate the replicated website to Magento 2, and testing can be performed.

Step 5: Begin with the production server migration There are three types of modes during the Magento migration [Setting mode, Data mode, and Delta mode]. The setting mode migrates the available configurations in the Magento 1 website, data mode migrates the data and delta mode migrate the changes taken place during the migration in Magento 1 website [The incremental changes]. Once the data migration has the network access for connecting the Magento 1 with Magento 2, you should stop the admin activities (expect the order management). Then stop the cron jobs (if any cron job is required to be running, you need to make sure that it should not create new database entities). The data migration tool can be used to migrate the settings, media files (Media files need to be transferred manually from Magento 1 to Magento 2). Migrate Magento 1 to Magento 2 database. Extensions that cannot be migrated to the latest version, you need to install it manually and map the files with the Magento 1 extensions files.

Step 6: Design and theme implementation (if required) You need to implement the necessary design changes to the Magento 2 website, including the themes (if required). During the migration process, merchants also need to pay focus on the designing part. When the website gets migrated to the updated version, the look-n-feel for the end-user should not get affected.

Step 7 Update data to Magento 2 website After the data migration, you should incrementally update the data have been added to the Magento 1 store and transfer it to the Magento 2 store. The step can also be said as the third mode of the migration, which is Delta mode, where the incremental data should get transferred from the existing version to the updated version.

Step 8: Go live Once the Magento 2 site is up to date, you can downtime the Magento 1 website and integrated the cron jobs, reindexing, DNS, load balancers for the Magento 2 website. Magento 2 store is live, and you can start all the activities on it. After the official news is out for Magento 1, it is most important for the merchants to have their platform running smoothly with the functionalities. After 2020, migration will not be a choice for the Magneto 1 merchants. The migration process also need time, please make sure before planning for the process you comfortable dedicating time and investing in the migration for getting more enhanced services for your business.
